Wow lucky me!
September 30th, 2003 at 7:18 am by David FarrarAccording to Stuff Parliamentary staff can now attend a 25 minute maori prayer session every day to help cope with stress.
Parliamentary Service claim that the sessions would be held outside normal working hours, yet they are from 8.30 am to 8.55 am which is well into the working day for the staff I know.
I wonder if someone organised daily 25 minute drinking sessions to help cope with stress, whether that would be allowed during work time?

Prayer for Stress Relief
As has been noted in this Stuff item (as well as elsehwere), there are now Maori prayer sessions to help stressed out workers cope with their jobs. Well, if I had been offered prayer sessions while at my last…

So, does parliamentary Services provide any other paid chaplincy services for its staff?
Inquiring minds etc…

If they do, it is news to me. Some years ago when in Government, there was a chaplain (not sure if paid) who would pop into offices to ask how you were feeling.
Unfortunately for her, she always visited me when I had a crucial deadline on, so the net result was an increase in stress levels as I got asked inane questions about how I was feeling when we had a press conference in 20 minutes to prepare for.
The issue isn’t about the activity or religion in question, but having half an hour a day paid time off for any activity.

I’d think that whether you get a paid half-hour off every day for whatever is a matter between you and your employer. If the PSA is good enough to extract one for Parliamentary Services staff, then more power to them. That’s what unions are supposed to do!

Exactly – decrease productivity, and increase the need for more staff….

I would phrase it as “gain benefits for their members”, but I guess it depends on which end of the job market you’re at.

Maybe we should encourage the Labour/Green staffers to take more time off?
Any Parliamentary Staff I know (in National and Act) tend to work 12-14 hour days as a matter of course – I am sure they find having an extra half-hour added to their day a real bonus and worth the PSA membership; probably explains why so few join.
