Vote for an alternative to Wellywood Add this story to Scoopit!.

You can vote at the Dom Post for one of five alternatives to Wellywood. The top two options will then go into a run-off ballot against Wellywood. That final ballot should be a ranked one, otherwise it may be seen as an attempt to have Wellywood win by splitting the vote.

My order of preference is:

  1. Te Capital
  2. Wellington’s lost umbrellas
  3. Wellington (blown away)
  4. Taniwha
  5. Eye of Taniwha Whataitai
  6. Wellywood

Make sure you vote and have you say. We all have to live with the winning option.

  1. labrator (985) Says:

If they’re going to persist and go forward with it, why not regularly rotate it for different events? Sevens, Hobbit premier, Wearable Arts etc.

  2. 3-coil (1,097) Says:

    JACKSONS HOLE

Bugger, our suggestion didn’t even make it to the final list :-(

  3. Elaycee (2,519) Says:

@DPF – Who on earth identified this short list from the 350 nominations?

Was it the same people who organised Sesqui?

  4. adamsmith1922 (738) Says:

    They are all dreadful.

Sorry DPF, but ‘Te Capital’ is just appalling, appalling

  5. Linda Reid (321) Says:

Really bad options. Can I vote for none of the above?

  6. double d (143) Says:

ummmmmm. what is this obsession with a “cute” sign.
how about a sign that says Wellington or no sign?
    silly silly silly

  7. Manolo (6,440) Says:

Te Capital? Bollockswood is more appealing.

  8. David in Chch (410) Says:

    WHY? WHY? WHY?!!!!

Why _anything_? Why is a sign needed _at all_? What is wrong with a nice bit of green hillside? Lord knows there is little enough green space around our cities as it is. Why must every empty space be filled with something artificial?

sigh. It is just so second rank and second rate.

  9. STC (52) Says:

‘None of the Above’ and ‘nothing’ should both be options.

  10. Nookin (1,827) Says:

“Runway – turn sharp left and proceed 12 km.”

  11. Lucia Maria (909) Says:

I don’t mind the “blown Wellington” sign, but “Te Capital” is horrible, the umbrellas are cute, but I’d wonder what the point was, and the Maori symbols are just too much, especially the taniwha.

If people don’t vote, then those who like the signs will win. I’m just voting for the Wellington sign.

  12. aitkenmike (66) Says:

    1) No sign at all

If thats not an option then either Wellington blowing away, or the umbrellas – at least it’s a bit of humour.

I agree DPF, that having the top 2 go through could be seen as a cynical attempt to split the non-wellywood vote. I hope you (and I) are wrong. (I completely disagree with you on ‘Te Capital’ though – Blegh.)

  13. Longknives (897) Says:

The Taniwha might be a little dangerous and potentially rather expensive-I’d imagine making a sign of him will anger him somewhat and we all know that Taniwha can only ‘appeased’ by the opening of cheque books….

  14. s.russell (1,137) Says:

Sorry DPF, but my view is almost exactly the inverse. I think Te Capital is a horrible pastiche, and it is insulting to Maori and te reo – which is a beautiful sounding language. Worse than Wellywood.
And why on Earth would we want a sign that highlights something BAD about Wellington. For that reason the umbrellas and Wellington blown away are just really really bad choices.
I like the Taniwhas though. They are quintisenntially Kiwi, and I love the idea of a dynamic sign. So my choice is:
    1. Eye of Taniwha Whataitai
    2. Taniwha
    3. Wellington (blown away)
    4. Wellington’s lost umbrellas
    5. Wellywood
    6. Te Capital

  15. Mark (530) Says:

A second rate copy of a second rate american sign is just what Wellington needs.

  16. Tom B (48) Says:

As my non-existent Jewish mother would say “Oy, these signs, the pain they are giving me!”

I’m with s.russell – I think Eye is actually quite cool and really grabs me. I’m not a fan of the two wind based ones. I know it’s a windy place but move on people.

I’m not one of those so against Wellywood that I would want to burn it down but I’d certainly support sabotage if we ended up with Te Capital.

  17. Scott Chris (4,146) Says:

Crikey, what a lot of provincial Oiks you Whellingtonians are.

Here’s an interpretation of the alternatives:

    1) A really dumb suggestion
    2) An even worse suggestion
    3) A silly suggestion
    4) An inane suggestion
    5) A suggestion made up by a small dog
    6) Something copied off the back of a cornflakes packet

And the two winners go up against……Wellywood. I wonder who will win. Reminiscent of the General Election.

  18. Peter (735) Says:

    1. No sign. What on earth is wrong with a natural hill?

    If they must, then….

    2. Wellington (blown away)
    3.Wellington’s lost umbrellas
    4. Eye of Taniwha
    5. Taniwha
    6. Wellywood
    7. Te Capital

  19. Bob R (650) Says:

A giant weta, or no sign at all.

  20. Sofia (263) Says:

Wellington lost umbrellas – suggested by five people
Taniwha Whataitai – submitted by one person
    Taniwha – 1
Wellington – in different formats – 35 people
    Te Capital – 1 person

    total 43 people
    Wellington population [2009] 195,500 people

  21. Interested Party (53) Says:

They are all crap – how about “Capitals” as Wellington is always claiming its the capital of everything in NZ – and us who know better smile and think how provincial

  22. tessdrew(1) Says:

I’m just really confused about the umbrellas. Who uses umbrellas in Wellington? It’s way too windy. Cute, but definitely not a symbol of Wellington at all

  23. Hayden Wilson(1) Says:

Anyone know why the fishhook idea isn’t an option?

  24. backster (1,479) Says:

    Why not “Das Kapital”

  25. mpledger (282) Says:

I kinda like the two wind ones because they fit in with the “wind sculpture” theme that is along cobham drive
    - the knitting needle, the 2 vawt and hawt windmill sculptures and the singing bamboo stands.

Perhaps they should make the signs move. Maybe the umbrellas turning over in the wind.

  26. Pauleastbay (2,168) Says:

This is the same as giving yourself your nick name – tres wanky, tres sad, tres Wellington

  27. gump (253) Says:

That list was chosen to make “Wellywood” look like a sensible choice.

I can think of no other explanation for the apparent idiocy of the alternatives.

  28. Mick Mac (681) Says:

    wellywood beats them all.
the others were thought up by clods.

  29. Viking2 (6,713) Says:

    Why not “Das Kapital”

Too late for that. Hitlers second in command has shifted to New York.

  30. Pauleastbay (2,168) Says:

    V2

    You are on fire ,excellent

  31. adamsmith1922 (738) Says:

No signs at all would be best
No Wellywood – crass and stupid, second rate – why copy the US,
If we have to have a sign, then just a simple Wellington, no crap motifs or silly paint jobs, or invisible 3D

Oh and BTW if these were the best of creative input we should be very, very worried

  32. bka (121) Says:

Nothing – because Wellington’s green hills are part of its charm.

Or what labrator said, make it changeable to suit events, and in between them sublet to the brain behind the Tui billboards and have some humorous or pointed commentary for the people flying in. As Wellington is a political / public service city that’d be appropriate.

  33. badmac (128) Says:

Won’t matter, long term It will be renamed Te Upoko o te Ika a Maui. Or if you are lucky Te Whanganui-a-Tara. So put that on the sign, and celebrate the heritage. Who wants some poncy white dukes name hanging over the city.

  34. barry (762) Says:

Honestly – Te Wellington. How minor and weak mined is this nation.

Either Wellington – or the preferred option – nothing

  35. Farmerpete (24) Says:

I have long admired how well Wellington has done their waterfront and central city, unlike Auckland whose planners have been out to lunch for decades. But this crap is puerile drivel! It is not worth a blog post and it is definitely not worth any council time! Jeez!
