The four debates

Here’s how I saw them all:
- 1st One News debate – advantage Goff
- The Press debate – win to Key
- 3 News debate – win to Goff
- 2nd One News debate – advantage Key
With the minor party debates, I’d say the best performer was Hone Harawira. Not that I agree with his policies, but he articulates the “anti-capitalist” view better than any of the other leaders on the left.

Agree.
The format of TV3 wasnt a good one for Key.

Using “debate” is somewhat erroneous IMO, circus is more accurate

Goff only won the tv3 debate because of the topics chosen, but he did win.

“he articulates the “anti-capitalist” view better than any of the other leaders on the left”
All I remember was him blaming “white mofos” for every disadvantage of the “Maori race”

DPF -”2nd One News debate – advantage Key”
Really? Fair enough, I would like to know your reasons if I could. I thought it was a slight win for Goff. Presentation wise it was a better debate for him, he scored some good policy hits and looked strong by trying to get Key to answer his questions, ie – directing the flow of the debate. It was no ‘gamechanger’ or anything like that but Goff seemed more comfortable and capable than we have generally seen before. Again there wasn’t much in it.
I didn’t really like the format much, I guess the intent was to enable discussion rather than accusatory, aggresive debate but I don’t think it worked, they talked over one another, seemed a bit bland as they were not encouraged to engage, and Key especially didn’t really engage that much with Goff (though that might have been intentional). However I though Espiner was better than during the first debate .
[DPF: I agree Guyon was v good in this debate. I thought Key handled asset sales better than any previous debate and hammered the debt message well. Goff got a bit too Al Goreish in his approach,
Audrey Young and John Armstrong have both also said a narrow win to Key, and I agree with their conclusion and reasons, so I'd recommend reading their columns]

The debates were tiresome. Four is far too many. There should be one which a panel of Journalists question both Leaders and one a town hall style debate. In Australia they have one only.

Any chance everyone is giving a higher score to Goff simply because he’s outperforming what was expected of Goff himself?

The best part of the debates were the ad breaks.
