Vote against Wellywood Add this story to Scoopit!.

The Dom Post reports:

Will Wellingtonians be blown away by the winning alternative to Wellywood?

The public vote has been counted and the sign dubbed Wellington – Blown Away is the clear winner of the first stage of voting with a whopping 46 per cent of the votes.

Designed by a team from advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi, the sign dIt is aepicts the word “Wellington”, with the last few letters appearing to be whipped off the hill by the wind.

Second with 21 per cent of the votes was The Eye of the Taniwha, which shows the giant eye of the mythical beast gazing across the harbour.

These two designs will now go head-to-head with the Wellywood concept in a final vote that opens on Wednesday, and closes on November 17, with voting via dompost.co.nz.

As I blogged previously, putting two alternatives against Wellywood may be an attempt to skew the result. There is a risk that say 65% don’t want Wellywood, but if the vote is 35% Wellywood, 33% Wellington – Blown Away and 32% Eye of the Taniwha, then Wellywood wins. It is a shame they do not allow us to rank the three alternatives.

Because of the nature of the vote, I urge all those who do not want Wellywood to vote for “Wellington – Blown Away”, to avoid splitting the vote and letting Wellywood win. It got twice as many votes as Eye of the Taniwha in the first vote, so is the most likely to beat Wellywood.

Voting starts tomorrow and both Wellingtonians and non-Wellingtonians can vote. Please vote for “Wellington – Blown Away” to finally kill off the Wellywood sign once and for all.

Maybe the Taniwha sign should have a ‘cuppa’ with the Blown Away sign

  2. James Stephenson (842) Says:

Perhaps non-Wellingtonians might like to vote for “Wellywood”, so we can point and laugh when it wins…

  3. Manolo (6,440) Says:

    Yawn, yawn.

  4. awb (151) Says:

Blown away is just as much a rip off of Hollywood in design terms, I’ll be voting taniwha in the hope that we don’t end up with a tacky eyesore on the hill. Nobody will vote Wellywood anyway. How I wish there was an option to just leave the hill as is, or possibly just leave it with the All Blacks sign which currently resides there.

  5. thepolecat (61) Says:

Why don’t they just leave the “All Blacks” sign there?

How are they going to get the “All Blacks” sign down?

Why do we need ANYTHING up there anyway?

  6. Laksa (3) Says:

Would prefer nothing at all but I intend to vote for Wellywood- if only to ensure those who really do not like Wellywood will put any left over fireworks to good use.

  7. davidp (2,328) Says:

Hills don’t need signs. I don’t drive around the countryside thinking “that is a nice hill/mountain covered in trees, but it would look a lot better if someone stuck a stupid sign on it”. The fact that the airport company keeps on with this process makes me think they’re idiots who are determined to maximise the damage to their reputation.

  8. ciaron (913) Says:

Perhaps non-Wellingtonians might like to vote for “Wellywood”, so we can point and laugh when it wins…

Or, we could sell our vote to Wellingtonians?

  9. Mary Rose (204) Says:

I went with the Eye initially – as the marginally least awful and only because ‘no sign at all’ wasn’t an option.

The umbrellas and the Taniwha looked really stupid and Te Capital was totally pathetic.

The blown away one is just another lame version of the Hollywood sign.
If it’s a choice between Blown Away and Wellywood, it’s like being told you can choose between drinking a glass of wine vinegar and drinking a glass of cider vinegar. When you’d rather not drink vinegar at all.

  10. m@tt (411) Says:

Wellington blown away is just too cliche for me. I’m sticking with the eye.
Having said that it really does look like someone is trying to give Wellywood the best possible chance.

  11. James Stephenson (842) Says:

Ha, nice ciaron. What would TradeMe do?

  12. infused (496) Says:

I will be voting for the Wellington blownaway sign, but really am disappointed with the cynical ploy of the airport to legitimise their unwanted sign by having people vote for what it should be, without the option of ‘no sign’. When anyone complains now, they will just say, ‘hey, its what the people of Wellington wanted!’.

  14. ciaron (913) Says:

James Stephenson; I’m damn tempted vote for Wellywood on your premis :)

  15. redeye (468) Says:

Can anyone tell me the point of the sign? What are they selling? Why do they need it signposted?

  16. GL (55) Says:

I will be voting for the eye of the taniwha – the “wellington – blown away” sign is almost as much of an imitation of the Hollywood sign as the Wellywood option. If we have to have something up there it should be vaguely original.

  17. Scott Chris (4,146) Says:

The Saatchi idea is clever, but alas, at a glance it is not immediately evident what it signifies.

Looks more like an earthquake has hit.

The other consideration is Whether or not the Windy Weather is What Wellington Wishes to….. acceeeeeeentuate the positive, eliiiiiiiiminate the negative

    Not to mention earthquakes.

    How about a giant W?

If it blows over, you could rename yourselves Mellington.

    Still beats Wellywood but.

    Snigger snigger.

  18. toad (3,373) Says:

As an Aucklander, I’m not all that fussed about Wellington’s silly sign, DPF.

But how about a deal – I’ll urge Green voters to vote for “Wellington – Blown Away” if you urge National voters in Epsom to vote for Paul Goldsmith.

  19. Paulus (866) Says:

Is this election under MMP rules or FPP ?

  20. Ed Snack (644) Says:

Well, I’ll be voting via as many IP’s as possible for Wellywood. To me it really symbolizes Wellington so well. The fact that it drives certain Wellington types into near frothing madness at the thought is simply a bonus.

What ever happened to not taking yourselves too seriously, Wellingtonians ?

  21. KH (494) Says:

Rigged of course. There is no option for ‘No sign’
And what about a related option ‘reduced charges’

  22. thedavincimode (3,031) Says:

Do Wellingtonians care that they look like a complete bunch of tossers whilst all this effort goes into something so utterly pointless.

If you really must do something, plant a fucking shrub and then go do something useful.

  23. Brian Smaller (3,554) Says:

“Wellington – Blown Away” – I thought that was Charles Chavel’s campaign slogan.

  24. s.russell (1,137) Says:

So you want a choice bewteen a sign which says “Hey! We have a lot of wind in this city”, and one which says “Hey! We are ripoff artists with no original thoughts”.

Sorry, but I’m sticking with the taniwha.

(I agree this should have been a Preferential Vote!)

  25. deserthead (9) Says:

I take it this blogpost is example of why we shouldn’t vote for FPP in the referendum

  26. backster (1,479) Says:

As an Infratil shareholder I would like to see an Ad. for their new Petrol Brand Zed…Otherwise I will show my support for Peter Jackson.

  27. thepolecat (61) Says:

    Wellywouldn’t.

  28. Pauleastbay (2,168) Says:

Poor insecure bastards needing a sign to know where they are. Tragic, worse still they have gone public, don’t the drips remember ‘the public’ gave us a labour government for 9 years, so you can’t trust them.

  29. Mark (530) Says:

As a wellingtonian this whole issue is cringeworthy and crass. Leave the bloody hill alone. We do not need to copy some second rate eyesore from California. What are these lunatics thinking?
