A “tongue-in-cheek” advertising stunt telling people they were being evicted from their homes has backfired, forcing a public apology from the company responsible.

The orange flyer, left, has “Home Eviction Notice” written on the front, but inside explains the benefits of Generation Homes’ home and land packages.

It was sent to 15,000 Hamilton properties last week and while it generated some interest from potential buyers, it also upset a few. Generation Homes’ Hamilton director, Alana Savage, yesterday apologised for any offence caused after receiving a barrage of complaints from Hamilton residents.

“They were really quite upset by it.

“We’ve had people leaving messages on our phone really swearing.

“People are very, very upset,” she said.

It’s not all bad for Generation Homes though. They are probably now short-listed to run Labour’s 2014 campaign :-)

    Yep – Labour did the same thing to HNZ tenants in 2005 campaign with much the same result. Generation Homes should offer the Duck a job so that he can do everyone a favour and get the hell out of Parliament.

    At least it proves what Labour has always known……you can’t fool all of the people some of the time but you can fool 27% of the electorate all of the time.

    Yet further proof – if any were needed – that marketing people (the Colouring In Department) are right up their with HR (Human Remains) as being amongst the most useless of human beings.

    Pauleast – at least Reader’s Digest make people feel noticed and important to someone, being specially selected to pre-win multiple prizes and to be able to do scratchies that are guaranteed to be winners puts the recipient on a pedestal along with everyone else who’s had their address added to the mass mail database.

    Well, this tells you something about the Kiwi character. (Only SOME kiwis I hasten to add – readers of this blog excepted!)

    When I emigrated to this fair land as long ago as 1974 I soon found that many Kiwis had a ‘sense-of-humour-deficiency’ in their mental make-up.

    I soon learned that one had to be careful what one said to a Kiwi – or, rather, how to put it – for fear of being taken literally or misunderstood.

    Any appreciation of Sarcasm and humourous irony didn’t seem to feature in the mental make-up of many of my new countrymen – and women.

    This recent episode goes to shows that literal acceptance by some people of the clearly humourous or ironic lives on!!

    Akaroa – some of us have since leant how to signal not to believe something literally, we either mention the name of a bird with white fluff on it’s throat or we add the words “yeah, right!” Generation Homes failed to do either.

    Alas Akaroa is so right. Far 2 many NZers have had a humour removal operation done at birth.

    However You can recognise them They are usually thin lipped females who look at you like youve farted when you crack a funny.

    AND most are Labour or Green supporters.

    What sort of moron picks up their mail & reads only the front of a bit of paper printed in orange & rings the removal company? Gullible wouldn’t start to describe them. Anyone that stupid or confused shouldn’t be allowed to walk to the letterbox unaccompanied.

    Little wonder the Jehovah’s Witnesses keep knocking on doors.

    None of you who believe that company did the right thing got elderly female relatives living on their own, or have you tossed them into the waiting to die clubs ?
    A lot of elderly women never dealt with crap like this until their husbands died, so yes it would frighten some.

    Shock advertising may generate attention in the media but rarely works on the public. Companies gamble with the reputation of their brand when adopting this type of attack/shock advertising, the potential for it to back fire are high. If this is an example of tongue and cheek humour, I would sack the advertising company pronto.
